Mentoring & Faculty Development
Faculty Mentorship of Faculty
Mentoring is defined by the National Research Mentoring Network as “A mutually beneficial, collaborative learning relationship that has the primary goal of helping mentees acquire the essential competencies needed for success in their chosen career. It includes using one’s own experience to guide another person through an experience that requires personal and intellectual growth and development.” The UK Department Faculty Mentorship program will pair new faculty members with an existing faculty member to provide this role initially.
Mentorship Oversight Committee Members: Oversight of the mentorship program, mentor-mentee matches, and mentorship program evaluation will be directed by the Mentorship Oversight CommitteeThis committee is appointed by the Department Chair. Current committee membership:
• Dr Regina Fragneto
• Dr Michael Harned
• Dr Tom McLarney
• Dr Paul Sloan
Mentor Expectations: Mentors meet formally with the mentee, become familiar with the career goals of the mentee, and actively seek out resources to assist the junior member both within the University of Kentucky and in the larger academic anesthesiology/research community.Mentors promote effective communication to foster a productive mentoring relationship.
Mentee Expectations: The mentee is responsible for forming a clearly defined career path, with the assistance of the mentor, including goals and milestones in the appropriate array of the following areas to meet individual goals: (e.gClinical Service, Research, Grants, Publications, Education, Service, and Outreach). Clear communication of the mentee’s plan will enable the mentor to make useful connections and suggest appropriate resources.
Faculty Mentorship of Residents
Faculty mentors provide constructive feedback on resident progress in the training program, discuss any issues with performance or other concerns, and serve as a resource for discussing academic and career goals and guidance. Each resident is assigned a faculty mentor prior to beginning residency. The new list of faculty mentors is published during New Resident OrientationFaculty mentors volunteer for this role and meet with the residents formally a minimum of two times per year (Fall and Spring). Faculty and resident mentorship pairs may meet at any additional times as desired. Faculty/Resident mentorship pairings remain throughout the 4 year residency for continuity. Changes may be requested for unique circumstances and must be approved in advance by the Program Director.
Faculty (Mentor) Expectations: Meet formally with resident mentee(s) at least two times per year (Fall and Spring). Review mentee information in MedHub (e.grotation evaluations, CV, learning objectives, CCC letters). Meet with the mentee for additional sessions as needed or requested by the mentee, program director, or CCC.
Resident (Mentee) Expectations: Arrange for meeting times with faculty mentor a minimum of two times per year (Fall and Spring). Complete MedHub Portfolio (CV and personal learning objectives) in preparation for discussion with faculty mentor.

Resident Peer Mentors
Peer mentors provide guidance to assist in the transition to residency training, as well as a source of advice and support throughout residency. Each resident is assigned a peer mentor prior to beginning residency. Residents (preferably PGY2/3) volunteer for this role.
Resident (Mentee) Expectations: Resident mentees are expected to meet with their peer mentor during planned events (orientation breakfast, etc.) have contact with their peer mentor throughout residency as needed and desired.
Resident (Mentor) Expectations: Mentors contact mentees prior to orientation and meet with mentees during orientation (e.gbreakfast meeting, dinner). Mentors are expected to contact mentees on a regular basis throughout residency and meet with mentees as needed to provide advice, assistance, and peer support. Prompts will be sent by Amy for mentors to check in with mentees during key times of the year (e.gfor PGY1 residents: before residency, after July, before ITE, around March before coming back onto Anesthesiology rotations).
Peer Mentor Awards: The Peer Mentor Award is given each spring as part of the Annual Program Evaluation event. Mentees nominate their peer mentors for the award, one of whom is chosen by the department Wellness Committee to receive this recognition.
